Building on empathy, the Civic asset of civility helps us uncover differences and understand the values held by the members of our learning community (Practice M1), whether they be students, other educators, or parents. In this article, psychologist Jill Suttie of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center provides a primer on empathy, defining empathy and adopting the word “empathy” itself as an acronym for seven practices in building this critical skill.
